INTO HERMIT COUNTRY -
PROP THTR - Rhinoceros Theater Festival - Curious Theater Branch - Chicago, IL

Written and performed by
Jonathan Putman

Directed by Idris Goodwin
Production Design by Brett Neiman and Mark Handley using photographs by Mike Bolsinga

September 9 - October 7, 2005

(photo at left from a workshop performance at Rec Room)

In 2001, actor/educator Putman set off to teach English in Korea. Two years and four countries later he returned, fully bearded and full of stories. This hour-long solo performance is a collection of lessons of what not to do should you find yourself on the Korean Peninsula. Often humorous, occasionally poignant, always embarrassing, this piece is essential to anyone thinking of traveling Into Hermit Country.

CLOSE TO VICTORY -
Loring Playhouse - Minnesota Fringe Festival - Minneapolis, MN

Written by Idris Goodwin
Starring Jonathan Putman, Mark Handley, Seemore Perspective, Jasmine Harris and Idris Goodwin

August 6- 15, 2005

"Close to Victory" on August 6, 2005 at the Loring Playhouse,
Minneapolis MN (From left to right:) Special Ron (Seemore Perspective),
Victory Simmons Jones (Idris Goodwin), Zora (Jasmine Harris), and Two-way
(Mark Handley)

"Close to Victory is a witty, multi-layered exploration of the issues and conflicts that artistis (in this case, a spoken word collective) face down in order to achieve creativity. Addiction, poverty, writer's block, relationships, collaborations, are unpacked by five actors in a way that transcends the limited set and bare bones production values. Idris Goodwin's script is witty, touching, multi-layered and well-structured. There are real moments of tenderness and comaraderie between the performers that make you think they've may have actually lived through some of the situations in the script. I'd recommend this show just so Fringe audiences can get a view into the world of young artistis and the demons they face down in order to create." - Reggie Prim, Fringe Festival Blogger (Blak_Bloggah)

Assistant Directed by Lauren Pretnar
Fight Choreography by Tony Sancho and Kevin Murphy

Two strangers storm into a coffeehouse. One bleeding. One in need of Tobacco. Will they transcend their horse-and-buggy consciousness?

This one-act play featured four musical interludes by the famously talented Malcolm Palmer, and included in-your-face staging that had non-theater goers clamoring for more theater. A quintessential Hermit show.

( Our deepest thanks to Sam and the late Jinx Cafe for allowing us to take over the space for a couple of months. We couldn't have done this one without you, Sam)

( Top to bottom: Wayne (Jonathan Putman) stands over Jack (Mark Handley) as Eli (Bill Hoffman) looks on; Wayne tellin' Eli what's what in "The Backroom"; Again, in the backroom of the coffeehouse with Eli and Jack.)
